Geronimo Died Here

Today’s activities - uniform issue, medical (blood draw, panorex, optical, etc.). I ship from here to Santa Fe, New Mexico for two weeks of intensive Physical Fitness jazz, then two weeks in White Sands doing desert training, rifle qualification, etc, and after a month of this stuff I will finally get to go to Ft. Huachuca for my schooling. Food here is okay… so it ain’t like mama used to fix; oh well, get over it. We get a bit of time off to hang out in civilian clothes, go to the PX, etc… might as well enjoy it while it lasts.

Our barracks here is located on the site of an old hospital that was torn down in 1914. There’s a huge marker stone near the smoking area, announcing “Geronimo Died Here”… suddenly, I am much less inclined to go airborne. Go figure.

Main annoyance here is that my ATM card won’t work in the local ATM machines… either that, or they’ve been tapped out of cash by the time I get to them.
Wotthehell… if this is the worst gripe I’ve got right now, I think I’m doing okay.

We’ll see what happens when I get to Santa Fe.
Take ‘er easy, people.

Hurry Up And Wait

Well, nothing ever goes quite as-planned, and there were some glitches in the travel reservations. I’m sitting here at the downtown Drury Inn, waiting for a plane tomorrow morning. From there, I go to Ft. Sill, Oklahoma for inprocessing, and thence to White Sands, New Mexico for “Warrior Transition Course” - four weeks of something kinda’ like basic training.
Seems I was mistaken about Ft. Leonard Wood - well, New Mexico sounds a lot more interesting.

Hurry-up-and-wait….

The Odyssey Begins… Again.

Well, it’s my last night as a civilian. I don’t know when I’ll get regular access to the internet again, so I don’t know how often I’ll be able to update this thread, but I figured it’d be good for everyone to be able to see the experience of my stint in the Army from my viewpoint. I’m hoping to be able to make this a weekly blog-sorta’-thing… I’ve gotten a good digital camera, so with any luck there’ll be pictures to go along with the commentary.

To everyone, my best regards, and special thanks to John & Karen for hosting such a kickin’ send-off party for me on Saturday. Take ‘er easy, people, and if you haven’t registered to vote yet, DO SO.

More to come…
